T-Model Ford enjoys Jack Daniels

So excited to see him on 6/2 at Radio Radio here in Indy...

"Born in 1921, T-Model Ford waited until he was 58 to start playing the guitar and until he was 75 to start recording. “He has been shot, stabbed, and poisoned,” wrote Jim Dickinson in the liner notes to Bad Man. “His ankles wear the ragged scars of chain gang shackles. He learned the hard way.” Ford’s music incorporates his life experience to create a potent brand of juke-joint blues. “In an era when the blues scene is dominated by white musicians who pick note-for-note renditions of blues warhorses…,” noted Jim Mcguinness in Bergen County, New Jersey’s Record, “Ford comes off as the genuine article.” Despite a late start, Ford wasted little time establishing himself as a Mississippi bluesman with deep roots in the Delta."

more mid 90's HC nostaglia: THREADBARE edition

So we just moved and I started the task of unpacking some of my old cd's that I haven't looked at in years. One of those was Threadbare's Feeling Older Faster CDEP  (Doghouse Records) which I picked up when new in '94 or '95. I'm too lazy to check facts. Tons of 90's hardcore doesn't hold up for shit. Either the songs are shitty high school kid emo poetry with awesome, scoopy, Crate tone or its a huge string of BROOTAL mosh riffs. Threadbare did something original. They were heavy as fuck and you can tell they were for real and playing with emotion. Well if they weren't they made it sound genuine. To me, at least, it still holds up. No one I know really ever talks about them, so I am guessing they are underrated by many. So POTAH is here to spread the word. The band was from Minneapolis (one of the lesser 'apolises of our great nation, well at least to 'napolis). I don't know what members went on to do or really care. Just listen to this shit and feel it.

slow bloggiddybloggering

for the few of you that do read/look at POTAH, i have been slacking lately.... mostly because we have been  moving from the westside compound to new digs in Fountain Square. here we have way more room to mess with our bikes and listen to METAL! i hope to post about such things soon. in the meantime, go listen to "Don't Break the Oath."

beer

Last night we got to be among the first to taste a couple of the beers from the Fountain Square Brewing Company. Its not fully operational yet, but they were kind enough to invite us over to sample some of their test batches. First of all the people running the show are great and need our support. I guess the Salvation Army across the street isn't too happy with the idea of a brewery opening up. There is a public hearing in May on this. it would be nice to get a crowd over there to show support for the brewery. Its not like there aren't a ton of bars and restaurants serving booze in the neighborhood? As we discussed with one partner last night, the Salvation Army must just think that a brewery is going to attract a bunch of hobos who need their fix of a $5 pint. Anyway, it's silly. A brewery here will be wonderful for the neighborhood just like Sun King and Flat 12 are great for their areas and the city in general. They had their pale ale and porter ready to sample last night. They advised the porter needed a bit of work still, but I found it to be delicious. Being a fan of pale ales and IPAs in general, I was excited to try their pale ale. It was pretty much perfect. Hoppy but not overly so. Strong and bold enough to make things interesting, but not overpowering. I'm looking forward to filling up a growler and chillin' and sippin' on the porch on a warm summer night. We also got to see the plans for the building which is just an old auto shop that's been cleared out. It should turn out to be a cool place with a tasting room and an outside patio type area.

Fountain-Square-Brewing-Co

Also tried the Glazed Ham Porter over at Flat 12. Interesting. Tasted like i was drinking Ham beer!

sxsw...pcm part 2

Another brief sxsw post...I don't really listen to much HC these days unless its old stuff that comes up on my ipod whilst shufflin'. Doesn't mean i don't enjoy it, I just don't keep up. With that being said, I was pretty pumped to see Trash Talk at Emo's after I had heard snippets of their tunes. They're from Sacramento. I'm sure they are famous in HC circles and I'm just behind, but they fucking rule. Classic HC with short, fast songs, but with some added modern brootality, i guess? Just pissed and mean and aggro. Singer dude loves to use long microphone cables to go to the floor and all over. He must be checking the sound from the floor to make sure the audience can hear a good mix. Not sure why he feels the need to somersault off the stage though. And why do their fans hate each other so much that they hit each other while watching this band. Get along fellas! in all seriousness, I guess their guitar player got stabbed by some white power dude before they went to Austin so they had a fill-in. That's fucked up. Hope he is alright.

Arson Anthem kid of sucked.  Hank III wasn't there, not like that would've saved them. Just a bit boring i suppose.

Go to The Hole in the Wall bar in Austin. Its like the melody inn of Austin i guess. the pic above is from there. -pcm

7.5 ?'s with Thorr-Axe

Thorr-Axe are a rad doom metal band from southwestern Indiana. Expect to hear a lot from these dudes in the future as they are on the upswing motherfuckers!

1. Give me a background on thorr-axe please.... who are you, how'd you guys meet, why did you start dooming, etc?
We all went to high school together. Travis (the drummer) and I had been wanting to doom it up since November of 2007, but the original incarnation of Thorr-Axe didn't come around until about that time in 2008. We wanted to play real, genuinely heavy music, since there really isn't any in our neck of the woods. Travis played bass and a friend of ours did drums for about two shows, and then we split. We reformed in August of '09, switched Travis over to drums and picked up Mitchell McKinney on bass, and recorded our first EP in January of 2010 at Basement Rage with Bob Fouts. Ever since then, we've been gigging out all over southern Indiana and seeking to expand even further. We just wrapped up recording our first full length album, which will be titled "Wall of Spears" at Basement Rage with Bob Fouts.

2. while recording at basement rage with bob fouts, did he ever fart so nastily that you threw up or almost threw up? if not, next time you see him feed him chili dogs. Did he do any dumb shit when you recorded with him?
Fortunately, we never had any toxic meltdowns during the recording process. He didn't do any dumb shit by any measure of the word, haha. He DOES make some balls-deep cookies, though...

3. favorite 5 albums or the moment?
Burzum - Filosofem
Krallice - Dimensional Bleedthrough
Reverend Bizarre - II: Crush the Insects
Warning - Watching From a Distance
Sleep - Holy Mountain

4. I just found banana peel by computer, that i forgot about... do you think anyone has ever really slipped on a banana peel? do you guys eat bananas often? How brown do you let them get?
My dumb ass has at least once, haha. So because of that, I have some PTSD about bananas, sou they're kind of a no-go for me. I don't know about Roach or Mitch, though.

5. You guys seem young but have some rad tones and tunes happening. What gear are you all using?
Tucker (Me):
Guitars: Agile Valkyrie 2 Floyd Rose (DiMarzio Super Distortion pickup in the bridge slot) and an Ibanez IC400 Iceman.
Amps: Live, I run in stereo. I run a 50 watt Laney Pro Tube AOR and an 80s Peavey Butcher, each with their own 4x12.
Effects: I boost both of my heads with one of the 666 Dragonfly BM-1 black metal pedals, and I use a Boss DD-3 delay for solos.

Mitchell (Bass):
Bass: Ibanez 90's TR50.
Amps: Peavey Mark 3 300 watt head into a Peavey 2x10/1x18 cab and an old off-brand 1x15 cab.

6. I notice that you guys covered Dragonaut. Bulletwolf also has done that song a few times. Y'all ever fuck up the song like we do? (i'm lying, Bulletwolf never fucks up..ha!)
The only fuckup we usually have is playing it too fucking fast, haha! It's this stoned-out song, and we just have to fucking blast through it for some stupid reason.

7. favorite pre-show meal besides hot dogs?
Shitty gas station taquitos and red bull!

.5  ....about tire pressure?
Fuck if I know what that means, haha.

...by the light of lamp i sit to type...

Primus/Pork Soda, had to dig out an old favourite.
I've also rocked some later Primus recently, Anti-Pop, Tales from the Punchbowl (good spins in their own rite),
but i don't want to talk about them, i wanna talk Pork Soda.
this came out in 1993, and it completely BLEW MY MIND!!
Man, what the fuck is going on here?!?!?!?!
I was way too young to understand what was goin on here.

...bass...
Never had i heard a bass like this, fretless, distorted, all these other effects.
The playing style?!?!  just so weird, different and out there.
If I had kept on my path of Claypool worship this album started me on, i'd be pretty whigged out right now.
The bowing bit on "Pork Soda" is simultaneously hypnotic and annoying.
A re-recording of the song "The Pressman" (first heard on their live debut) churns out a nice bendy bendy riff that the dude probably made up one day while tuning.
and of course there is the oh-so-interesting SLOP of "My Name is Mud."
man, when i think about how many times i have heard somebody try to do this.  just gross.
In a huge understatement, this album is covered with awesome bass work.
...guitar...
There isn't really any other guitar play to compare with Larry Lalonde.
He is doing such complicated things that really just sound like wankery.
I still can't wrap my head around this guys' style (on this or any other album he is on) but I like it.
The way he noodles around the basslines on "The Ol Diamondback Sturgeon" is just perfect.
Cut a track ahead and he is in perfect nu-metal swagger with the bass line on "Nature Boy"
(I would be first in line to admit that this generation of "rock" influenced the worst generation of "recorded material" thinkable)
There aren't really any solos or riffing, just a ton of texture coming from those guitar strings.
...drums...
Tim "Herb" Alexander is the last shove-as-many-notes musician I appreciate.
It's like dude is TRYING to make you think he is playing to much,
and, while i admit that he actually is, it seems to drop right in line where it should.
It compliments the bass just as the guitar lines do, excellent support roles.
It also helps that the dude obviously has drum chops that put him well above the level of "master" of the drum kit.
...voice/lyrics...
Nothing can be said about Les Claypool's voice to credit it that hasn't beed said before
also
Nothing can be said about Les Claypool's voice to knock it that hasn't been said before.
Like it or love it, it is what it is and it fits primus perfectly.
I mean, it's not like he's trying to pull off some Creedence Clearwater Revival or Sam Cooke golden sounding music, they are basically making loud, electric carnival music to show off what they can do with effects, polyrhythms and some damn good chops (the bonus of this, being that they pull it off pretty well becasue the songs hold up) and his near-catterwauling suits that theme just fine.
With lyrics as dark as "Bob" and "My Name as Mud" you get the sense that this guy might be a little too depressing to get along with.
With lyrics as ridiculous as "Mr Krinkle" and "DMV" you feel like you could get some doobies and draft beer and have a dance party.
Hell, a song dedicated to fishing is always gonna at least be interesting (Ol Diamondback Sturgeon).
I can pick any song on Pork Soda and my mind will automatically revisit the chamber I have buried that thinks lines like...
"a pack of mentholated cigarettes keeps my air nice and thick"
"I've been to hell I spell it...I spell it DMV"
"My genetalia and pectoral muscles aren't quite what I would like them to be"
&
"if sweatiness makes you horny, well darlin' I think you're in luck, 'cause all of this clever banter giver me the urge to F%^&"
...are brilliant
but is is the delivery that really makes it.
His voice is equal parts:  whine, nose, nerd & hick.
While the lyrics are equal parts: juvenile, scholar, nerd & hick.
an equation, that in Primus' case, works out just fine.
...
having this album turn me on to their earlier, "classic" (by psuedo popular definition) albums
[Frizzle Fry, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, and their live debut Suck on This]
is one reason i am proud to have been a part of the Phase One MTV Generation (before it became a reality station, it was pretty boss).
the videos for 'Mr Krinkle' and 'My Name is Mud' were damn radical.  go yuotube 'em

other things of note (for me) about this album...
- it is one of the first cassettes i just HAD to get on CD
- it is one the first digi-paks i remember ever seeing
- it is one of the first cds i remember tripping balls too
- i learned it note-for-note, forgot it, and now have fun in the fact that i convinced myself i actually used to know it.

Twilight of the Album Sharing

Just wanted to share an album from Harakiri, which I play guitar in (when we decide to be active). Please enjoy.

SATAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!

Deicide was kind of a joke to me when I first heard them. The satanic shtick was laughable, but I still enjoyed it. Then I kind of became obsessed with everything they did up through the Once Upon the Cross album. I even dug a bit of Serpents of the Light. Since then, meh... I think they quit caring at that point. Legion was more technical than Once Upon the Cross and would be classified as my 2nd fave Deicide album, but the god damn songs on OUTC are just well written, classic, Floridian death metal at its finest; therefore, it stands as my favorite Deicide record and one of my favorite death metal albums in general. I can understand some of the hate and lack of respect this band gets due to some of the bullshit they ended up releasing, but fuck. Listen to this song and try not to get your satanic headbang on.

7.5 Q's with Kent Hiltz

Mr. Hiltz has been a bro to this dude for a long ass time.... he deserved to answer some shitty questions!!

1. so whats been up with Wrecked lately besides gettin' the ladies all, well, happy? What other projects are you working on?
Wrecked has been rehearsing for a Battle of the Bands that happens on Jan 15.  It's at Scores Bar and Grill in Columbus, IN.  Even if we do not win I am sure to have some hellacious, fried bar food.  We are also trying to get a distro deal and some national opening gigs through a friend of ours in Cincy.  We are hoping that 2011 is a productive year for Wrecked.  I am not currently working on any other projects.  I did dust off some Harakiri demos for the new album to see how much stuff we have and I can't wait to unleash it upon the human population.  It may result in mass suicides or homicides but we have to do it.  People want and need to die.  Other than that, I sing for Krazyfly and play guitar for Taken.  They are cover bands so I don't necessarily call them "projects."

2. remember when we were on tour and you brought canned food but no can opener? why would you do that?
I think I was probably high when I packed my bag.  Nonetheless, I did find ways to open the cans until I stole a can opener from a grocery store.  Giant icemaker corners in hotels work pretty well.

3. what bands have you been digging lately and why?
Lately, I have been listening to a lot of Tool.  Taken decided that they wanted to play "The Pot" and rather than buy just one Tool album I bought three.  The songs "Aenima" and "The Grudge" are really sticking with me.

4. what is there to do in southeast Indiana?
There are lots of things to do in SE IN.  One of my favorites is driving to Cincinnati or Indianapolis to find something to do.  Sometimes I'll even get on a plane and fly as far away from SE IN as I can afford.  Another thing is to visit Lil' Charlie's Restaurant in Batesville where they cook up the best food in town and brew their own beers which means that you can buy growlers there on Sunday and take them home.

5. you are a man of many musical talents. you can play guitar, drums, sing and probably play woodwinds or something. what do you suck at?
I suck at punting footballs if I don't stretch my legs first.  I suck at Greco-Roman wrestling.  I suck at keyboards.  I also suck at being a millionaire because it still hasn't happened.

6. quick run down on your guitar rig please...
I mainly play a Dean Black Gold Flying V.  My pedal board includes a Boss TU-2 Tuner, Boss 7-band EQ pedal, Crybaby(the ORIGINAL), Digitech Whammy, Boss Chorus, Boss Delay.  My amp is a Carvin Legacy with 16 Ohm Legacy Cabinet.  I use Jazz III picks.

7. favorite Doors song?
"5 to 1."  I swear that Ace Frehley stole the solo for "She" from this song.  Robbie Krieger is a badass.

7.5    ....from Lance Armstong?
One testicle.  I rest my case, your boner.

Kent says: "Check out www.officialwrecked.com if you would like to get a virus on your computer.  If you do not want viruses on your computer then look up Wrecked on Facebook and make sure that you have a better antivirus program than that shitty Norton."  and thats his cute pup up there!!

rotting your mind with 1994 doomy music

Mindrot was a doomish metal band from Cali that was together in the 90's. They released a few CD's with my fave being the 3 song Forlon ep on Relapse in 1995. That's what this post is about: to inform you its damn good and should not be forgotten. Its doomy, full of despair, and has cool brutal vocals. They even kick it up a bit throughout showing off some Bolt Thrower-esque and hardcore/punk influence. Then they'll get ya as they go into some gothy vocal thing for a moment. Then its back again. It all works. Its intense. The intro into the first song, "Forlorn", into when the riff kicks in is enough to hook me each time I pop this in. Its enough to make you slit your wrists and bleed out with your headphones on.

peep it! - pcm

borrowed awesomeness from the sludge swamp
